TAC CLUB REWARDS – BE THE DIFFERENCE

Road Safety Starts with Us.

At Woodend Hesket Football Netball Club, we know what it means to show up for your team - and now it’s time to show up for your community too.

At Woodend Hesket Football Netball Club, we know that being part of a strong club means looking out for each other – not just on the field or court, but out on the roads too. That’s why we’re proudly taking part in the TAC Club Rewards Program again in 2025 – a statewide initiative encouraging all AFL Victoria clubs to step up for road safety and help eliminate fatalities and serious injuries on our roads.

This year, speeding is the key focus. Did you know that even going just 5 km/h over the limit increases your crash risk by 44%? It might seem small – but the consequences are huge. Speeding contributes to over 30% of fatal crashes on Victorian roads.

  • Speeding? Quickest way to let the team down.

  • A tackle hits hard. A crash hits harder.

  • Speed and it could be game over.

  • The faster you go, the harder you hit.

  • Show up for your team. Slow down on the road.

Distractions also remain one of the most dangerous driving behaviours. Whether it’s replying to a message or changing a song, it can wait. Using your phone while driving significantly increases crash risk. The fine in Victoria? $593 and 4 demerit points.

  • Turn your phone to silent or Do Not Disturb.

  • Keep it out of reach.

  • Set your playlist or GPS before you drive.

  • Use a legal phone holder.

  • As a passenger, speak up and help the driver stay focused.

Then there’s drink driving. We say it on game day: know your limit. But when you’re driving – there’s only one rule: don’t drink at all.

  • If you drink, don’t drive. It’s that simple.

  • Plan ahead with a designated driver, rideshare or taxi.

Driving tired is another major risk – especially with long trips to away games or early morning training. Driving after less than 5 hours of sleep makes you 4 times more likely to crash.

  • Be well rested before long trips.

  • Avoid driving late at night or early morning.

  • Plan a break every 2 hours.

  • Pull over for a nap if needed.

When it comes to vehicle safety, many don’t realise their car’s rating could be the difference in a crash. Choosing a safer car can save lives. It doesn’t have to be expensive.

And finally, our learner drivers. If you’re on your Ls, make sure you’re getting experience across all conditions – not just the hours, but the quality of practice too. L plate drivers are at higher risk of crashes. Experience helps.

  • Log at least 120 hours of driving in varied conditions.

  • No supervising driver? Volunteer as a TAC L2P mentor.

SLOW DOWN. PROTECT YOUR TEAM. BE THE DIFFERENCE.

From now until the end of August, we’ll be running events, sharing messages, and sharing members who are championing safe driving. Because the choices we make behind the wheel affect more than just ourselves – they protect our mates, our families, and our future.

📅 Mark your diaries: TAC Road Safety Round is 21 - 27 July – we will have guest speakers at the social rooms on the Thursday night (24 July) and acknowledging the round on Saturday at our home game. More details coming soon!

We want to hear from YOU!
Leave a comment below with your pledge or a message of support – send us your reminders of what matters most: getting everyone home safe. Whether it’s “no speeding,” “never touch the phone,” or “always plan a safe way home,” every promise counts.

And remember – when you slow down on the road, you’re not just following the rules.
You’re showing up for your team.

Let’s keep our community safe – on and off the field.

Together, we can BE THE DIFFERENCE.
