Woodend Hesket Football Netball Club acknowledges and sincerely thanks Alistair "Wiz" Rae, who has informed the club that he will not be continuing as Senior Coach in 2027.
Wiz arrived at Gilbert Gordon in 2018 and, over the nine years that followed, became one of the most significant figures in the club's recent history. He was appointed captain in his second season - a reflection of the immediate respect he earned from players and officials alike - and went on to serve as one of the most selfless and committed leaders this club has seen.
As a player, Wiz earned senior interleague selection and was named in the RDFNL Team of the Year at Centre Half Forward. But it was his character as much as his ability that defined him. He led with a club-first attitude at every turn, and under his captaincy the Hawks found their way back to finals football and claimed their first Grand Final appearance since 2007 in 2023.
When significant list turnover followed at the end of 2023, Wiz didn't step back - he stepped up. Taking on the senior coaching role, he worked tirelessly alongside the football committee over three seasons to keep the program competitive and moving forward. It was not an easy task, and he tackled it with the same determination that has always defined him.
Among the highlights of his coaching tenure, none stands out more than his commitment to developing the next generation. Over the past two seasons, more than ten Under 19s players have made their senior debut under Wiz's guidance - a legacy that will continue to benefit this club long after he has handed over the reins. He also leaves behind a quality core group of senior players that the next coach will be well placed to build from.
Wiz will remain a part of the Hawks family in 2027 - playing on wherever he's needed, seniors or reserves, and supporting the club and football department off the field. Again, selflessly. As always.
To Wiz, Abbey and the family - the club thanks you for everything you have given to Woodend Hesket over the past nine years. It has meant more than words can do justice to.
